Is it ethical to accept financial if you don’t need the funds?

I recently applied for a certificate program (meaning less coursework than an associate’s degree) at a local community college. In-state tuition is not expensive and I applied with the full intention of paying for whatever courses are required. However, along the way, during my application process, I found out about a state-run grant program.

The program is not need-based. The only requirements are to be a resident of this state, enroll in a certificate or diploma program at an eligible school within the state, and maintain a ‘B’ average. Eligible applicants will have all their tuition paid as well as receive a book allowance for each quarter or semester. While talking to SavvyDad last night, I mentioned that I hoped to be able to receive the grant and would ask the school once my application is complete. He commented that I shouldn’t take the money since I don’t need it.

I disagree. The program doesn’t make any distinction regarding financial need. In addition, I am not being dishonest in order to qualify. For me, if I qualify for the funds, I will accept the funds. It’s fewer dollars out of my pocket. So, faithful readers, what do you think?

Spring is coming to an end and the weather is definitely getting warmer. If you’re like me, you try to resist turning on the AC as long as possible. However, that’s only delaying the inevitable. So here are some ways to keep cool AND save money.

Increase the temperature on your thermostat – There’s no need to keep your home like an icebox. Instead of cranking the AC down to 70 degrees, try 78 and see how you feel. I promise, unless you’re in direct sunlight, it’s not that bad

Install ceiling fans – Feeling a cool breeze across your skin makes you feel several degrees cooler than you are. The electricity used to power a ceiling fan in the room you’re in is much less than trying to cool your whole house.

Close vents in rooms you don’t use – Why pay to cool rooms that you’re not in. Close those vents and the doors to those rooms as well. Because you’re cooling a smaller portion of your home, your electricity bill will be smaller as well.

Get a programmable thermostat – This way you can regulate your AC use. There’s no point in running the AC when you aren’t home. That’s a pure waste of money. I set the AC to go off around 7am when I leave home in the morning and to come back on about an half hour before I get home. This way, the house is cool when I arrive but I haven’t wasted any power cooling an empty house.

Clean your air filters – Clean or replace your air filters once a month or whenever they look dirty. Your AC unit has to work harder to draw air through a dirty filter and this lessens its efficiency. Trust me, air filters cost much less than electricity.

Use curtains to block the sunlight – While I love natural sunlight, I keep my curtains drawn when I’m away from home. This lessens the amount of sunlight (meaning HEAT) that comes into my home, keeping it cooler overall.

Insulate your attic – If your attic doesn’t have the proper amount of insulation, you can lose a lot of your cooled air, forcing your air conditioner to work harder. Increasing your insulation is not very expensive and an easy DIY project. You’ll soon recoup the cost as you can save ~$100/yr on your energy bills.

Install an attic fan – This is something I’m considering doing. To get even more bang for the buck, I’m looking at solar attic fans. Attic fans draw hot air out of the attic which has a cooling effect on your home. If you install a solar model, there is no added electricity cost.

What are ways you’re saving money and staying cool this year?

Unless the people in my previous post, Mr. Savvy and I generally have great success with our DIY projects. Case in point, for the last few weeks, there has been a strong gas smell when we use the oven. I finally decided to call the gas company, sooner rather than later, as I don’t want to blow up our house.

Friday, the gas company rep came out and said the issue was with the oven, most likely the ignitor. So Monday, an appliance repairman came out. He confirmed it was the ignitor and told me it would be $210 (parts and labor) to fix it. He didn’t have the part with him but said he would return later. I didn’t like the idea of paying that much for what looked like a simple fix (I could see the ignitor when he dismantled the oven to diagnose the problem). So when he called back to reschedule, Mr. Savvy declined.

After locating an appliance parts store, we were able to purchase a new ignitor for $32. After about an hour of Mr. Savvy’s time, the oven was fixed. So instead of paying $49.95 for the service call and $210 for the repair, we paid $49.95 and $32. We saved $178, almost 70%, by doing it ourselves. How have you saved money by DIYing?

Summer is right around the corner and with it comes my annual quest for summer clothes/shoes. I have yet to figure out why I never seem to have enough summer clothes. I haven’t done much shopping yet. The little I did do was compliments of a Macy’s one day sale + coupon + gift card left over from Christmas and multiple NY&Co coupons. I got summer tops appropriate for work and play as well as a really cute maxi dress.

The other thing summer means is going to the beach. Mr. Savvy and I always spend a week at the beach at some point during the summer. Last month, I was dismayed to discover that one of my favorite swimsuits doesn’t fit anymore. I mean, I could still get in it but all body parts are supposed to stay IN the suit, not creep out. LOL. So I’m on a quest for a new swimsuit. I refuse to wait until the last minute.

As I’m typing this, I’m starting to think that I could probaby use another beach hat, a pair of beach-appropriate sandals, a cuter beach purse and on and on. I guess I’ve got my work cut out for me. Where do you find summer deals?

I just returned from two back to back trips – one for business, and one for pleasure. Anyone who knows me, knows that I love to travel. Therefore, here’s a re-post of some of my favorite travel tips. What do YOU do to save money on travel?

People often ask how can they save/reduce spending while still enjoying life. The goal is not to deprive yourself but rather find ways to do the same things cheaper. Here are some ideas for saving money on travel.

DESTINATION

Be flexible – Unless there’s a specific reason for going to a certain location, check out alternates. Hubby and I love the beach but we rarely have our heart set on one particular place. We like to make a list of all the places we’d be willing to go then choose the place that has the best airfare and/or lodging prices.

Know the seasons – Hubby and I decided we wanted to spend Christmas week of 2005 in Hawaii. That time of year is high season for Hawaii and we knew that. We decided in 2004 (a whole year in advance) that we’d go to Hawaii that week. Airlines release seats 331 days in advance so when the clock struck midnight (literally), we were on the phone booking our tickets.

AIRFARE

Loyalty has its benefits – Consider joining a frequent flyer program, especially if you live in a hub city. You will earn free flights as well as get perks (and sales) that other people don’t get. Even if you can’t fly that airline all the time, most airlines have partner airlines that you can earn miles with as well. I fly Delta almost exclusively and it has paid off for me.

Be flexible on your dates – If you have your heart set on Orlando, keep your eye out for deals. An airfare sale may pop up and you’re able to take advantage if you’re not fixed on a certain date to travel. Also, be aware that weekends are the most popular (and most expensive) travel days. If you’re willing to travel Saturday – Monday (vs Friday – Sunday like everyone else), you can save money on your flight.

LODGING

Once again, loyalty has its benefits – I primarily stay at Hilton properties and I get many perks in addition to free stays. Most hotel chains own a number of chains of varying prices so it generally isn’t hard to find a hotel in your chain. For example, with Hilton, I can stay at a Hilton, Embassy Suites, Homewood Suites or Hampton Inn and earn points for my stays.

Think outside the box – Hotels aren’t the only place you can stay. Condos or private villas are often lower priced and more spacious. In the past, I’ve used sites such as www.vrbo.com to find deals. Consider renting a timeshare unit from a site such as www.redweek.com.

Be direct – Booking your lodging online or through an 800 number doesn’t always get you the best price. If you’re interested in a particular property, call them directly and ask for their best rate. There are often specials that aren’t listed online or with the nationwide reservations number.

DINING

Coupons are your friends – If you’re going to a major city in the US, consider purchasing an Entertainment Book ahead of time. These can be had for about $15 and will save you money on dining out. Sites such as www.restaurant.com often sell gift certificates for less than face value.

Kitchenettes are your friends – If you have a kitchen in your condo or even just a microwave and fridge in your hotel room, you can save money on dining. Make a grocery run once you get to town or bring non-perishables such as oatmeal packets with you. That will let you have breakfast in the room once or twice and save yourself some money.

ENTERTAINMENT

Plan ahead – Look for discounts before you go. Some employers offer discounts to major attractions. The internet can also be a source of information. Do a little research about your destination before you leave. Also, consider picking up a guide book (I prefer the Lonely Planet books) for suggestions.

Befriend the locals – Local residents can be your best source of information and are usually more than happy make suggestions. Of course, they know where all the inexpensive or free things are as well.

Of course this post isn’t comprehensive but merely an overview. What are some of YOUR best travel tips?
