Happy New Year! As I reflect upon the past year, I realize how blessed am I, and not just financially. Though I didn’t meet all my goals, I have made great strides, personally and financially. I’ve decided to start off the year by giving back to others. This Saturday, I will attend a training session for VITA – the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. For those of you not familar with VITA, it is a program that provides free income tax preparation to low- to moderate-income taxpayers. I’m sure it will be challenging, as well as fulfilling, and I’m looking forward to it.
I decided not to set any specific financial resolutions this year. However, I will strive to keep doing what I’ve been doing – maxing out all retirement accounts (401k’s for Mr. Savvy and myself, IRA’s for both of us and recently added, Mr. Savvy’s SEP-IRA). In addition, I will continue to work to lower our expenses and increase our income. Did you set any financial goals for 2009?

Volunteer tax assistance helps so many people with a very stressful task – that is such a wonderful way to give. In terms of looking ahead…my thoughts turn to all the local businesses that are struggling to a survive right now. My money resolution is to make more conscious decisions about purchases (where and what). I have participated in a local CSI (community supported agriculture) for two years and have loved the produce, despite the additional effort and cash committment out front, so are planning to continue with this. I am reaching out by connecting with other women entrepreneurs as a way to share advice and keep up optimism. I have to say I am also impressed that you are maxing your retirement allocations – that’s a real motivator for me. Thanks again, DorothyW.
